Anatolia

Greek in origin, with a meaning that points at daybreak: "sunrise". It stays rare in Poland, given to only a handful of girls a year, so most people here have never met one.

What Anatolia means

Where Anatolia comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Anatolia comes from Greek. The word anatolḗ meant sunrise, and by extension the east, the quarter of the sky where light first breaks. The meaning is plain: sunrise. The same word named the peninsula of Anatolia, the land the Greeks pictured toward the dawn, so the name carries a geography as well as a direction.

For a long time the name belonged to the calendar of saints. Anatolia of Thora was a Roman virgin martyr, and her feast falls on 9 July, a date that let the name settle into church registers and, later, into Polish use.

In a Polish class register the name reads as older than most of its neighbours, and a teacher calling it aloud is naming a girl after the first light of morning, in Greek, anatolḗ.
