Adelina

Adelina reached everyday use with a Latin ending, the diminutive -ina that shrinks a longer name into something smaller. Its root gives the meaning "noble," and that sense followed the name into Italian and Spanish, where Adelina became a common choice in both. In Italy especially it belonged to grandmothers and great-grandmothers for generations.

The name shortens easily. Ada is the plainest of these. In Polish households Adelka does similar work, a familiar form for a small girl who grows into the fuller one later. Ada, by now, often stands on its own.

Whoever carries Adelina carries a word that once marked rank and good birth, though today it marks nothing more than a person. The sense of "noble" has loosened over centuries into something closer to warmth. What stays fixed is the shape: the Latin -ina, the two soft middle syllables, and the diminutives Ada and Adelka waiting alongside.
