Ambroży

Ambroży comes from the Greek Ambrosios, built on ambrosia, the food of the gods that kept them from dying. The short meaning follows straight from that root: immortal. Few names state their promise so plainly.

The most famous bearer is Saint Ambrose of Milan, a fourth-century bishop whose Latin name Ambrosius gave Poland its Ambroży. His feast fixes the name-day on 7 December. So any Ambroży reading a school register knows when his imieniny falls, and he can count on it every winter.

The name also has a feminine echo in ambrozja, at once a woman's form and the Polish word for the drink of the gods. The immortal sense was not glued on later. It sits inside the Greek word, in the alpha that negates and the root for what is mortal. That makes Ambroży a rare case where the meaning, immortal, is also the etymology.
