Albina

Albina comes from Latin, from albus, meaning white. The word sits behind ordinary things: the white of an egg, the albumen, and the word albino. So the name begins as a plain description of colour before it ever belonged to a person.

Its masculine partner is Albin, and the two have moved together for centuries. A girl named Albina and a boy named Albin might appear a few lines apart in the same school register, joined by that single Latin root. Saint Albina of Caesarea, a third-century martyr, gave the name a place in the Christian calendar, and her feast is kept on the sixteenth of December.

Whiteness here is a colour first. Any reading of it as innocence or clarity came later, layered on by people who liked what white suggested. The name itself only says biała.

Albina has never been common in Poland, and that scarcity gives it a certain edge on a class list. It reads as older, a little formal, closer to its Latin bones than most names around it. Say it slowly and the root shows through. White, albus, the same word that colours albino.
