Albin

Albin comes from the Latin albus, meaning white. The Romans used it first as the cognomen Albinus, a family label passed down among people said, by tradition, to be fair-haired or pale of skin. The word stays plain. White, biały, nothing grander.

Yet a plain word can gather a life. The Roman marker crossed into the Christian calendar through Albin of Angers, a bishop who died on the first of March in 550 and became a protector of prisoners and the poor. His feast still fixes Albin's imieniny on the first of March, so a boy named this shares his name-day with a sixth-century Frenchman he will likely never read about.

The variant Albina keeps the same root and only turns the ending toward a girl.

Picture the name on a class register in a Polish school, one Albin among a column of Piotrs and Jakubs, the older word sitting quietly beside newer ones. Nobody there needs to know Latin to carry it. The meaning waits underneath anyway, unchanged since Rome. Albin still says white, and its feminine, Albina, says the same.
