Solomia
A Ukrainian name still new to Poland: barely present before the late 2010s, now given to a few dozen newborn girls a year, though most Poles have never met one. It comes from Hebrew and means "peace".
Solomia Pronunciation
Solomia is pronounced so-LOM-yah (/sɔˈlɔmja/).
What Solomia means
Where Solomia comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
The name Solomia grows from the Hebrew root shalom, the word for peace. It shares that root with Solomon, whose Hebrew name, Shlomo, means something close to peaceable. In Ukrainian usage the feminine form settled as Solomia, and the short meaning carried into Polish stays plain: pokój, peace.
The name's best-known bearer makes the case for it. Solomiya Krushelnytska, born in 1872 in Galicia, became one of the great sopranos of her age. She sang Cio-Cio-San in the revised Madama Butterfly at Brescia in 1904, after the opera's disastrous La Scala premiere, and helped return it to the stage. Her voice reached Milan and Buenos Aires. Her first name traveled with her.
Because Solomia has no diminutive beside it, it tends to stand on its own. On a Polish school register it would sit apart, a Hebrew word for peace dressed in Ukrainian sound.
The meaning holds. Pokój, peace, is what the name says.
