Nadiia

Nadiia is a Ukrainian name. In Cyrillic it is written Надія, and it means hope. The origin is Slavic, and the older form behind it is the Church Slavonic word nadežda, kept in Russian as the name Nadezhda. That word did real work in the early church, made to render the Greek Elpis, hope, sister of faith and love.

In Polish the meaning comes through as nadzieja, the everyday word for hope. A Ukrainian child named Nadiia therefore holds a word Polish speakers already know, before they even meet the name. On a Polish class register the double i can look foreign, yet the sense stays plain.

The name stays close to its meaning. Where some names picked up their sense long after, Nadiia has always said what it says. It is hope, straight from the Slavic root, written Надія at home and Nadiia abroad.
