Victor

The name Victor comes straight from Latin, where victor meant conqueror or winner, the one who came out ahead. Early Christians took to it, and a second-century bishop of Rome, Pope Victor I, carried it into church history. From there it moved through English and French speech, and Polish reshaped it into Wiktor.

France gave the name one of its best-known bearers in Victor Hugo, the novelist behind Les Misérables. The English kept the Latin spelling almost untouched. Its sense stayed plain. A boy called Victor answers to conqueror every time a teacher reads down the class register.
