Vasyl

Vasyl belongs to Ukraine. It is a Slavic name whose meaning reaches high: royal, kingly. That older sense of rule sits at the front of the word, so the boy who carries it holds a name once kept for those who governed.

The most documented bearer is Saint Basil the Great, the fourth-century bishop of Caesarea, whose name grew from the same royal root.
