Valentin

Valentin grows from the Latin Valentinus, which traces back to valens, a form of a verb meaning to be strong or to stay in good health. The short meaning, strong and healthy, therefore sits near the origin instead of arriving later.

The name travelled well. French speakers kept Valentin, German families used it too, and in Russia it settled as a common given name. Poland took the Latin stock and shaped it into Walenty, while the feminine Walentyna grew from the same seed. A child could appear in a school register as Walenty and share a root with a classmate named Walentyna.

Saint Valentine gave the name its most public day. Walenty keeps his imieniny on the fourteenth of February, and the older Polish tradition tied that date to protection against nervous illness long before it became a day for couples. Say the name today and you still hear valens underneath, the plain wish for someone strong and healthy.
