Luis

Luis is the Spanish form of a name that reached Spain through Latin. Roman scribes wrote it Ludovicus, and Spanish speakers wore that long word down to two syllables. The meaning underneath is older than the Latin spelling: famous warrior. Fame and fighting both come from the Germanic roots that Ludovicus preserved on its way into Iberian churches and registers.

For centuries Spain gave the name to poets and kings. Luis de Góngora, born in Córdoba in 1561, wrote verse so dense that a whole style, culteranismo, formed around his work. The written name kept its Latin backbone in Ludovicus while ordinary speech held on to the short Luis. Two syllables, no more.

On a Polish class register, Luis now sits among the Szymons and Kacpers, a Spanish guest spelled the Spanish way. The teacher may stumble on the vowels once, then never again. Whatever else changes, the sense stays what it was under the Latin: famous warrior.
