Jonasz

Jonasz is the Polish form of the Hebrew name Yonah, and Yonah means dove. The bird sits inside the name before any story does. Long before the word reached Polish registers, it named a common creature people knew from rooftops and marketplaces, the grey bird that returns.

The most famous bearer is the prophet Jonah, the man in the Book of Jonah who was told to go to Nineveh, fled by sea, and was swallowed by a great fish. His story turned a plain bird-word into a name about being sent somewhere, resisting, and going anyway. So a boy called Jonasz carries a word for dove and, behind it, one of the shortest and strangest books in the Bible.

In a Polish class register the name looks settled and modern, four letters after the surname. Yet the root stays Hebrew, gołąb in Polish, dove in English. That is the plainest thing the name says, and it says it without help. A dove.
