Jarosław

Jarosław joins two old Slavic roots. Jar carried the sense of hardy, aggressive strength, and sław meant glory. Together they read as strong glory, which Polish keeps as silna sława. The name belongs to a wide Slavic family, so it also lives across the border as the variant Jaroslav.

The diminutive Jarek does the everyday work. A boy is Jarosław on the class register and Jarek to everyone in the room. There is a feminine form too, Jarosława, rarer but real.

One bearer makes the name easy to check: Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, the poet and prose writer who shaped Polish letters across much of the twentieth century. Through him the strong glory of the roots gained a clear literary association. Say the short version and most Poles picture a Jarek they know.
