What Izydor means

Where Izydor comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The name Izydor comes from Greek Isidoros, built from the goddess Isis and the word doron, meaning gift. In English that reads as "gift of Isis," in Polish "dar Izydy." Isis was worshipped across the ancient Mediterranean, well beyond Egypt, and the name kept her attached to whoever bore it.

The most documented Izydor is Isidore of Seville, a scholar and bishop who died in 636 and spent years compiling the Etymologiae, an encyclopedia of nearly everything known in his time. There is also Izydor Oracz, the farm labourer from Madrid honoured as a patron of farmers, whose imieniny fall on 15 May.

The short meaning stays close to the origin here. "Dar Izydy" was already the sense of the Greek word. No later gloss added it. When a teacher reads Izydor from a class register, the word still points back to a goddess and a gift.
