Aron

Aron comes from the Hebrew Aharon, a name carried in the Bible by the brother of Moses, the first high priest of Israel. Scholars have never fully settled its root, though the readings that endure point toward height: exalted, or the high mountain that stands over everything below it. The Polish gloss keeps that upward pull with wywyższony, and adds oświecony, one lifted into light.

In Poland the name arrives without a diminutive to soften it. There is no shorter Aron, no pet form waiting in the family. A child answers to it whole. That first roll call names all of it.

Aharon appears at the beginning of the priesthood, the man who spoke for Moses and wore the first breastplate. The meaning attached most often now, exalted, was drawn from that biblical stature rather than from any settled etymology. For a Polish boy the name still points the same way, toward the mountain and the height it names.
