Armin

The name Armin comes from the old Germanic element irmin, meaning whole or universal. That element named a broad idea of greatness among early Germanic peoples, and it survives in a scattering of words and names. Armin sits at the smaller, sharper end of that family.

Its most famous bearer stands behind a Latin mask. Arminius, chief of the Cherusci, ambushed three Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9. German writers later reclaimed him as Hermann, and by the eighteenth century Klopstock had turned his story into national drama. Armin kept the older sound.

In German usage the name stayed steady and unshowy. The Polish gloss, wielki przyjaciel, "great friend," is an affectionate reading attached to the name later. The Germanic root points elsewhere, toward the whole and the universal. On a Polish class register today, Armin is short and easy to call out. It carries the sense of "whole" that irmin first gave it.
