Amir

The name Amir comes from Hebrew, where its root points upward, toward the treetop and the high crown of a tree. That sense of rising above is old. It gives the name a shape before it ever carried any title.

Its wider life runs through Arabic. There the word means prince, and it means commander, the one whose order sets things moving, which Polish renders as książę, władca. The same word travelled into Europe by sea: English "admiral" descends from Arabic amir al-bahr, commander of the sea, picked up by Sicilians and Genoese during the Crusades. So four small letters hold a Hebrew image and an Arabic office at once.

In a Polish class register, Amir now sits between Aleksander and Antoni without a footnote. A child raises a hand when it is read out. Behind the sound wait the Hebrew height and the Arabic rank, prince and commander.
