Makar

The name Makar comes from the Greek makarios, a word that meant blessed and happy. Greek speakers applied it to the fortunate and to those who had died in peace. From the Greek East it passed into Christian use, and it settled most firmly in Russian and Ukrainian.

Among its earliest bearers stands Macarius of Egypt, a fourth-century monk and one of the desert fathers, who drew that same root into his name. The form itself stayed plain. Makar keeps no diminutives, no variants, no cross-gender pair; it arrives as one word and stays that way. On a Polish class register it looks brief, five letters read out at roll call without a stumble.

The meaning has not drifted. Where Katarzyna gained her sense of purity long after her Greek beginning, Makar still says what makarios said. The old root and the boy's name mean the same thing, blessed and happy.
