Lidiia

The name Lidiia begins with a place. Lydia was a region on the western coast of Asia Minor, and Greek speakers built a name from it: a woman from Lydia, one who belonged to that land. In Poland the same name settles into the shorter Lidia. The spelling Lidiia, with its doubled i, is the standard romanization of Ukrainian Лідія, which is how the name arrives from the east.

That eastern route matters. Ukrainian families carried Лідія across borders, and on official forms the transliteration keeps both letters intact. A clerk copies it sign by sign. So the same root can appear as Lidia on one document and Lidiia on another, depending on which alphabet came first.

At an imieniny in early August, a Lidia in Poland hears her name called across a room. The Greek sense stays underneath all of it: a woman from the land of Lydia.
