Lika

Lika grows from a Slavic root that means face. In Old Church Slavonic the word lik named the human face, and it later came to mean the painted face of a saint on an icon. Polish still carries that root in lice and oblicze, everyday words for the face a person turns toward others. The short meaning, twarz, sits right next to the origin here.

Lika does not hide behind a metaphor. It points straight at countenance, at the look someone shows. The name stays close to what its root said a thousand years ago, when lik meant simply the front of a face.
