Kiara

Kiara reaches Polish parents by way of English, though its root runs back to Greek. The name carries the sense of bright and clear, jasna in Polish. No standard diminutives or variants attach to it here, so Kiara arrives whole, without the softening that Polish lends to Katarzyna or Barbara.

Much of its spread comes through English-speaking culture. In Disney's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, released in 1998, Kiara is the lioness cub who grows up to inherit the Pride Lands. For many children born after that film, the name came already attached to a character.

On a Polish class register, Kiara now sits among the Amelias and Zuzannas, a foreign guest that settled in easily. It holds no name-day of its own on the Polish calendar. The meaning stays plain. Kiara means bright, clear, and in Polish sławna, famous.
