Kaya

Kaya reaches Poland by two roads at once. Its roots are Slavic, yet the meaning most people attach to it is Turkish, where kaya names a rock or a cliff face. A child called Kaya carries a small piece of geology in her name.

In Polish the sense lands as skała, kamień, the stone of a hillside. That reading came through Turkish rather than from the Slavic root, so the rock is a later attachment, a story added to the sound. The word stays short. Four letters, two syllables, easy on a class register.

Kaya suits girls and boys alike, and it asks for no diminutive to soften it. On a form at the urząd it fills the box cleanly, spelled in the nominative exactly as it sounds. Whoever holds it answers to skała, to kamień, to the plain Turkish kaya.
