Jonathan begins in Hebrew, in the form Yehonatan, which unpacks as "Yahweh has given." It reads like a small sentence, a statement about where a child came from. English adopted the name and made it both common and warm, though the Hebrew grammar still sits under every spelling.

The oldest famous bearer stands in the Hebrew Bible. Jonathan, son of King Saul, gave his loyalty to David, and their bond became one of Scripture's most quoted friendships. The meaning stays near that story. "Yahweh has given" works less as a label than as a claim the text keeps repeating.
