Jaroslav

Jaroslav grows from two Slavic roots. The first, jar, means fierce or vigorous. The second, slav, means glory. Put together they give the short meaning that Polish speakers still hear in it: fierce glory, or mocna sława.

In Poland the name usually appears as Jarosław, with the spelling Jaroslav standing closer to its Czech and eastern cousins. Friends shorten it to Jarek. The feminine form is Jarosława. One of the earliest famous bearers was Jarosław Mądry, the eleventh-century Grand Prince of Kiev whose byname meant "the Wise", a ruler remembered for his written law and his libraries.

On a school register, a Jarek rarely needs his surname; the class knows him already. The full Jarosław is what goes on the official form. The name has held its old sense of strength across centuries of Polish use. That fierce glory sits plainly in the roots themselves: jar and slav.
