Irmina

Irmina grows from a single Germanic root. The element irmin meant whole and great, with a pull toward the universal. Early speakers reached for it when they named something large in a good sense, something entire. The same syllable stands behind the Irminsul, the tall pillar held sacred by some early Germanic peoples.

A real Irmina exists. Irmina of Oeren, an abbess near Trier at the turn of the seventh and eighth centuries, is remembered as a saint, and old records tie her to the missionary Willibrord. So the name has a documented bearer who governed a community and left a mark in the church calendar.

Polish keeps the old force plainly. The short sense given here is wielka, potężna, great and mighty, and that reading sits close to what irmin once carried. Irmina has no diminutive or variant listed beside it, so it arrives on the class register and the imieniny greeting in one full form. Whole and great: that is what the name says.
