Sofiya

Sofiya begins in Greek, in the word sophia, meaning wisdom. The name travelled into Poland's eastern neighbours and kept its own spelling there: Ukrainian and Russian speakers write Sofiya where a Polish register would read Zofia. The meaning held across that border. Wisdom, plainly.

In Kyiv the Saint Sophia Cathedral has stood since the eleventh century, its name honouring Holy Wisdom rather than any single saint. A girl called Sofiya therefore shares her name with one of the oldest surviving churches in the region, and with the idea it was raised to praise.

Closer to home the name softens into Zosia, the diminutive a Polish teacher might read from a class register, while Sofia drops the y for a form that crosses easily between languages. That older sense stays put under both. The Greek sophia holds steady: wisdom.
