Sława

The name Sława grows straight from the Slavic root meaning glory and fame. In Polish the plain word sława still means exactly that. Old Slavic naming built whole names from this root, and it survives in Bolesław, Stanisław, and Mirosław, where the same sława sits at the end.

Sława itself is the short, unadorned form. It stands alone.

Its fuller companion is Dobrosława, which joins the root to dobro, the word for good, so the whole reads as good glory. The masculine Dobrosław belongs to the same family. A girl named Sława and a boy named Dobrosław share one meaning across the gap of grammar.

The sense stays close to the surface. When a teacher reads Sława from a class register, the word she says is also an ordinary Polish noun for renown. That doubling is unusual. Most first names have drifted far from any everyday meaning, yet Sława keeps hold of chwała and sława, glory and fame.
