What Rose means

Where Rose comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Rose comes from the Latin rosa, which meant nothing more elaborate than the flower. English speakers took that flower word and made it a personal name, so that by the Middle Ages Rose already appears on parish rolls across England. The meaning never wandered far. It still means the flower, kwiat róży in Polish.

Polish gave the name its own spelling and sound in Róża, with the accented ó. Read out a Róża on a class register and a few heads will turn, because the flower is sitting right there in the word, easy to hear.

The name also found a patron. Saint Rose of Lima, who died in 1617 and was canonized in 1671, became the first person born in the Americas to be declared a saint, and her feast carried the name into calendars well beyond Peru. Whether in English Rose or Polish Róża, the reference holds: the flower itself, rosa, kwiat róży.
