What Regina means

Where Regina comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Regina comes straight from Latin, where regina simply means queen. The word belongs to the same family as rex, the king, and rego, to rule, so it sat in Roman mouths long before it became anyone's given name. In English you can still hear it in regal and reign.

The early Christian world gave the name a face. Saint Regina of Alise, a martyr venerated in Gaul in the third century, carried it, and the Latin title Regina Coeli, Queen of Heaven, kept the word near Marian devotion. The meaning held. Royalty was the plain sense of the word, never a borrowed image.

In Poland the name has been in use since 1386, and it keeps its Latin shape on the school register, read out in full at roll call. A variant, Rehina, appears where local spelling softened the g. The name-day falls most often on the seventh of September. Two thousand years on, the short meaning has not moved: królowa, queen.
