Nell reached England as a short form, a name people used because the longer version felt like too much for daily life. Its roots run back to Hebrew, and the sense that clung to it over time was that of a bright, shining one, someone linked with light. English speakers took it up and made it their own, and by the seventeenth century it belonged to one of the most talked-about women in London.

Nell Gwyn sold oranges before she acted on the Restoration stage, and she later became a mistress of Charles II. Her name outlived the scandal. It stayed common enough that generations of English girls answered to it in schoolrooms.
