Milana

Milana grows from the old Slavic root mil-, the same root behind the Polish word miła, meaning dear or kind. The name reads as gracious, and in Polish its sense settles on ukochana, the beloved. That meaning sits near the surface, since the mil- syllable turns up across a wide family of Slavic names, from Milena to the masculine Milan, whose feminine counterpart Milana became in Russian, Ukrainian, and Serbian usage.

In Russian and Ukrainian homes it has long been a name given to daughters, and over recent decades it has spread into Italian and North American communities as well. No familiar diminutive has fixed itself to it, so the full four-syllable form does the work on its own.
