Mariya

Mariya reaches Polish through Russian and Ukrainian, where Мария and Марія name grandmothers, saints, and schoolgirls alike. The root is Hebrew, the same root behind Miriam, and Polish keeps its own line of it in Maria. What Mariya adds is an accent from the east, a spelling that tells you where a family or a story came from.

The sense most often attached to it is "beloved," in Polish ukochana przez Boga, beloved of God. Scholars still argue over the literal Hebrew, so that reading came to the name later rather than at its birth. It settled anyway, and it stuck.

Diminutives soften it into daily use. Marysia belongs to a small girl. Maryla goes to a friend, Mania to someone you have known your whole life. On a class register you might find a Marianna two seats from a Mariya, the same name split into two shapes. Both answer to Marysia by lunchtime.
