What Kasandra means

Where Kasandra comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Kasandra comes from the Greek Kassandra, a name carried by the Trojan princess of Homer's world. Ancient grammarians read its parts as a form of the verb kekasmai, to shine or excel, joined with andros, of man. That gives the sense recorded here: shining or excelling over man. In Polish the same idea settles into two words, wyróżniająca się, one who stands out.

The Greek figure left the name a long literary afterlife. Cassandra was granted prophecy and then cursed so that no one would believe her, and writers from Aeschylus onward kept returning to her. The Polish form drops the doubled s and the Latin ending, so Kasandra reads cleanly on a page.

A teacher calling the class register meets it without stumbling. It has no standard diminutive fixed to it, so the full form does the work.

Short and clear. The meaning holds: wyróżniająca się.
