What Iga means

Where Iga comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Iga began as a short form of Jadwiga, the Polish version of the Germanic Hedwig. Those older names join two battle words, hadu and wig, which give the sense often summed up as "warrior," in Polish wojowniczka. Iga kept that lineage while shedding the length, and settled into a compact Slavic shape of its own.

Poland already knew the long form well. Jadwiga of Anjou was crowned monarch in Kraków in 1384, ruling under the title of king. Centuries later the short form found a famous bearer in Iga Świątek, the tennis player who reached world number one and won several Grand Slam titles. The warrior sense needs little translation on a court.

On a class register the name is brief. Read the three letters and you meet a word that traces back, through Jadwiga and Hedwig, to battle.
