Fatima

Fatima comes from Arabic, and its meaning points to the act of weaning: one who abstains, one who is separated from what once fed her. The root behind the name describes a child taken from the breast, a small parting that grows into independence.

The best documented bearer is Fatima, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, honored across the Muslim world. Her name traveled with her reputation. Centuries later a Portuguese town took the same name, said to come from a Moorish woman who once lived there, which is how a Catholic pilgrimage site ended up holding an Arabic word for weaning.

In a Polish class register the name stands out at once. Fatima has no Polish diminutive or variant of its own, so it keeps one shape on every official form at the urząd. Underneath stays the old sense: to abstain, to draw apart.
