What Anastazja means

Where Anastazja comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Anastazja traces back to Greek anastasis, the word for resurrection. In Polish that is zmartwychwstanie. Early Christians took to the name for its plain promise, and one of its bearers, Saint Anastasia, an early martyr, is still commemorated on 25 December.

The root travelled east and west without losing its shape. In the South Slavic and Baltic sphere the same name appears as Anastasija, a variant that shows the Greek outline a little more plainly than the Polish spelling. Everyday speech wears it down to Nastka or Stasia, forms a school register might list beside the full entry.

Few Polish names wear their meaning so openly. The resurrection sense here is the origin itself, present from the very first use. So Anastazja means exactly what anastasis meant.
