Agata

Agata comes from Greek, from agathos, meaning good. The Polish gloss keeps to that root: dobra, good. Agatha is the older variant, and Aga the diminutive people actually use.

The name reached Poland with a saint. Agatha of Sicily, a martyr of the third century, fixed it in the calendar, and the imieniny for Agata falls on the fifth of February. On that day some parishes still bless salt and bread, the sól świętej Agaty, which families keep at home against fire and storm.

A girl named Agata meets the word early, on a school register between Agnieszka and Alicja. She learns it means good before she can spell it. The meaning translates the Greek. It was never a verdict on character. Aga on the playground, Agata on the official form at the urząd, Agatha for a Polish family with an English-speaking cousin. Each is the same root: good, dobra.
