Enzo

Enzo reached Italy as a short, bright name with a Latin shape, and it settled quickly into Italian speech. Behind it stands the old sense of a home ruler, the one who governs the household, which is why the name has long felt sturdy rather than ornamental.

One bearer fixed it in history. Enzo of Sardinia, a king and a son of Emperor Frederick II, spent his last decades held in Bologna during the thirteenth century, and the city still calls the Palazzo Re Enzo by his name. That single figure gave the name a medieval weight it never quite lost.
