What Dante means

Where Dante comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Dante is a short form of Durante, a Latin name built on the verb `durare`, to last or to endure. The meaning sits right there in the root. To endure is to keep going when lasting is hard, and the name holds that sense of the durable.

The Italian connection has one obvious source. Dante Alighieri, born in Florence in 1265, gave the name its weight when he wrote the Divine Comedy and finished it not long before he died in 1321. His own Dante was a contraction of Durante, so the poet carried the full idea of endurance under a clipped everyday form.

In Poland the name arrives without diminutives or variants of its own. A boy named Dante on a class register in Kraków stands out on the page.

What stays constant is the Latin sense underneath: trwały, wytrwały, one who endures.
