Dalia has a Germanic origin, and it reached its familiar shape through a flower. The dahlia was named for Anders Dahl, an eighteenth-century Swedish botanist whose surname belongs to that Germanic root. The plant lent its name to people.
The name found a second home in Arabic and Jewish naming. There it is read as a branch, a flowering branch, the pęd that pushes out from the main stem. That sense of branch was attached to the sound rather than handed down from the botanist. Two traditions hold the same word.
