Chloe
From the Greek for "green shoot". Most Poles have never met a Chloe: just over 500 carry it across the whole country. Even so, it's climbing, with more newborn girls given the name last year than in most years before.

What Chloe means
Where Chloe comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Chloe comes from the Greek Chloē, meaning green shoot, the first pale sprout that pushes up after rain. In antiquity it served as an epithet of Demeter, the goddess of grain, invoked over fields about to turn green.
The name has a documented early bearer. In Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, word reaches the apostle from "Chloe's people," which marks her as a real woman who ran a household in first-century Corinth. Centuries later the name belongs to the shepherd's world of Longus and his romance Daphnis and Chloe, and its cultural home eventually settled in English.
A Polish child named Chloe meets her name on a class register, spelled as it is, with no Polish variant to soften it. There are no diminutives, no cross-gender twin. The word stays close to its meaning. Green shoot: zielony pęd, the growth that returns each spring.
