What Bartosz means

Where Bartosz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Bartosz grew out of Bartłomiej, the Polish form of Bartholomew, and behind that older name sits the Aramaic bar-Talmai, meaning son of Talmai. Talmai has long been read as a word for furrows or ploughed ground, and that reading gives Bartosz the meaning it keeps in Polish today: son of the ploughman, syn oracza. The soil came into the name later.

Bartek is the everyday diminutive. On the school roll a boy is Bartosz; on the break between lessons the whole class calls him Bartek.

One bearer fixed the name in Polish memory. Bartosz Głowacki was a peasant from near Kraków who, during the 1794 uprising, ran at a Russian cannon at the Battle of Racławice and smothered its fuse with his cap, then turned the gun. Tadeusz Kościuszko made him an officer for it and granted him the surname Głowacki. So the ploughman in the name met a real man who left the plough to fight, and the plain sense holds: son of the ploughman.
