Aleksandre

Aleksandre traces back to the Greek Aléxandros, built from aléxein, to ward off or defend, and andrós, of a man. The English meaning, defender of men, is no late addition. It sits in those two Greek roots, and the Polish reading, obrońca ludzi, lands on the same idea.

Alexander the Great pushed the name across the ancient world, out of Macedon and east toward the Indus, and it kept spreading long after him. By the time it settled into Polish it had grown local shapes. Open a school class register and you may find an Aleksander a few lines above an Aleksandra, brother and sister to the same root, the feminine and the cross-gender forms of one word.

Aleksander keeps his imieniny on several days, the 26th of February among them. In everyday speech the long form gives way fast. It shortens to Olek, or to Aleks. None of that thins the sense underneath. Whether stretched to its full Greek length or clipped to a nickname, the name still says what Aléxandros said: obrońca ludzi, defender of men.
