What Yunus means

Where Yunus comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Yunus reaches back to the Hebrew Yonah, a word for the dove. Arabic and Turkish speakers took it as the name of the prophet Jonah, the man swallowed by the great fish, and the tenth sura of the Quran is titled Yunus after him. So the sound moves out of Hebrew scripture into Muslim tradition and keeps its bird intact.

For Turkish ears the name belongs above all to Yunus Emre, the Anatolian poet who wrote in plain Turkish around the turn of the fourteenth century. His verses are still sung. Children keep receiving the name partly because of him, seven hundred years on.

Picture Yunus on a Polish class register, listed among families with Turkish or Arabic roots who have settled here. It is short and easy at roll call. The dove behind it, gołębica in Polish, never drifts far from the surface, and Jonah stays folded inside the same three syllables.
