Xiaofang comes from two Mandarin words. 小 (xiǎo) means little, and 芳 (fāng) means fragrance, the scent of grass and blossom. Put together they read plainly as little fragrance. The name belongs to girls. Its origin sits outside the Slavic and Latin roots that fill most Polish registers, so grammar books here have no drawer to file it in.
In 1993 the singer Li Chunbo released a song called "Xiaofang." It told of a village girl with that name, and the record sold across China by the million. For one generation the name and the melody still travel together, and many people meet the word first as a lyric.
