Syntia

Greek at root, and it starts with a hill: Kynthos on Delos, the island myth named as the birthplace of Artemis. The spelling looks modern, but most Poles have never met a Syntia, and every one on record is a girl.

What Syntia means

Where Syntia comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Syntia is the Polish spelling of a Greek name, and it begins with a hill rather than a person. Mount Cynthus rises on Delos, the small Aegean island that ancient writers named as the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo. From that peak came Kynthia, an epithet of Artemis, the goddess said to have been born beneath it.

The short meaning keeps to that ground: from Mount Cynthus, pochodząca z góry Kynthos in Polish. Centuries on, the Roman poet Propertius took the same word, Cynthia, for the woman he addressed across his elegies. Through Latin it passed into English, and Polish took it by ear and wrote it Syntia.

On a school register the name reads as recent. Its origin is anything but. Say it and you are naming a Greek mountain: from Mount Cynthus on Delos.
