Zachar

Zachar comes from Hebrew. The root behind it means "god remembers," a promise more than a description. In Polish records the fuller form is Zachariasz, and Zachar reads as its shorter, eastern cousin. The name spread through Russian and Ukrainian usage, where Zakhar has long been an ordinary given name.

The biblical Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, carried this same sense of divine memory. That story kept the name in church calendars for centuries. A boy named Zachar in a Ukrainian school might share his imieniny with that older figure without thinking about it.

What stays constant is the sense of being remembered. The Polish gloss, "Jahwe pamięta," holds the same idea. Zachar is short. On an official form at the urząd it lengthens into Zachariasz, then shrinks back to Zachar.
