What Zhuldyz means

Where Zhuldyz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Zhuldyz comes from Kazakh, where the word жұлдыз means star. The origin sits outside the Slavic and Latin roots behind most Polish names, in the Turkic languages of Central Asia. The short meaning is literal. Star was the word for the light in the sky long before anyone gave it to a daughter.

In Kazakh, жұлдыз also names a star of stage or screen, the same second sense English lends the word. So the name reads two ways at once, the point of light and the famous person, and both readings are old. Girls carry it across Kazakhstan today. Written out in Polish it becomes Zhuldyz, though the Kazakh alphabet spells it differently.

On a Polish class register, Zhuldyz would sit among the Zuzannas and Julias with no name-day beside it. The Polish calendar holds no imieniny for it. What it holds instead is a plain gloss any teacher can give: gwiazda. Star.
