Yurii

Yurii reaches Polish ears as a Ukrainian name, a Slavic form tied to an old meaning: farmer, earthworker. The word points at soil and the labor of turning it. It names a worker of ground.

In the Ukrainian folk calendar, Yuriiv den, the day of Saint George, falls in spring. On that morning herders led cattle out to the first green pasture, and villages counted it as the start of real fieldwork. The custom survives in the record, a fixed date in the agricultural year. So the name kept its bond with sowing and the turned furrow.

On a Polish class register today, Yurii keeps its Ukrainian double i, a spelling a teacher notices at once. Poles honor the same Saint George under the name Jerzy. The gloss under Yurii stays plain: rolnik, the one who tills the earth.
