Yousef

Yousef begins in Hebrew. The older form, Yosef, was understood as a wish that God would add another child. The short meaning holds to that: god will add. Arabic carried the name forward as Yousef, and it belongs to the Prophet Yusuf, whose life fills the twelfth sura of the Quran.

In that account Yusuf reads dreams and forgives the brothers who wronged him. The same figure appears in the Hebrew Bible as Joseph, sold into Egypt and later rising to interpret the Pharaoh's dreams. One name, two long traditions, both reaching back to a single Hebrew verb of increase.

A boy named Yousef on a Polish class register sits between Jakub and Zuzanna, his name spelled the Arabic way. The form has no Polish diminutive of its own, so teachers use it whole. What stays constant across every telling is the meaning underneath: god will add.
